How To Roomscape

1. How much space do you have?

Whether you need shelves, a divider or an activity area, exact dimensions are useful.

2. How old are your children?

This affects the divider's height. Think 16" for an infant divider, 24" for toddlers, and 32" for preschool. These are just suggestions for good visibility. You may prefer heigher shelves near the wall, or a 48" high divider to create a nap area.

3. How much storage do you need, and what do you want to store?

This will determine shelving amount as well as type. Shelves double as boundaries and display when they are away from the wall, and can face either direction. You'll want to place your shelves first, then fill in the gaps with panels. Go to Shelves

4. How do you choose panels?

There are four types: Clear (great visibility), Solid (maple), Dowel, or Bulletin (for artwork display and sound absorption). Choose panel height to match your shelf height. Go to Panels

5. How accessible should the area be?

You can choose a gate or door to close off your divided area, or use arches to merely suggest a boundary. Go to Gates and Arches

6. How does Roomscapes connect?

Each shelf and panel have couplings, small devices attached to the sides, so they can be joined together in any combination using sturdy plastic posts that are 2½" wide. (Reckon them into your measurements.) Post height must match the height of the neighboring shelf, panel, or stacked combination. No tools are needed, and you can rearrange your Roomscapes whenever you want. Go to Posts

7. Safety and Stability:

Shelves:

  • Shelves can stand alone, or be connected to other shelves or panels.
  • When connecting shelves in a straight line, use 2 Posts and a Filler.

Panels:

  • Panels must be connected at both ends. (i.e. no free-standing ends)
  • No more than two panels in a straight line. (Options: create 45° or 90° angles, add a shelf, or use Wings.)
  • If you place panels on top of shelves or other panels to make a higher divider, the combined height should be no more than 48".

Gates and Doors need extra stability.

If you include one in your run:

  • It must be connected at both ends to a shelf or panel at least 24" high.
  • Use posts at least 32" high.

Never connect panels in a straight line with a door or gate. Use 45° or 90° angles.

Shelves less than 3' long must be connected to a door or gate at a 45° or 90°.

You can attach a door or gate to the wall, using a Wall Adapter and Post on one side, and a shelf or panel on the other. Doors and Gates

Beginning and ending a Roomscapes Run:

  • Shelf: Any shelf can end off a run. This makes your divider flexible—it can be moved to accommodate shifting requirements in your program.
  • Wall Adapter can be screwed to the wall or other stable fixture so that it can support a Post. The bottom of the Wall Adapter must be on the floor.
  • Wings come in sets of two. If you're ending a run with a panel, attach a wing on each side, perpendicular to the panel. Go to Wings

8. Fine-tuning your space:

The Adjustable Panel can fill in any odd gaps in your Roomscapes run. It adjusts from 2' to 3' wide, taking care of any extra inches you have to cover.
