Create an Oobleck Day

cover of the book

Sit down with your group of children and read the famous book of Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr Seuss.

Then wheel in a sand and water table.

They'll have a great time mixing this oobleck and reliving the story of Bartholomew and the King. They will not only learn from the King how to admit their mistakes and say, “I'm sorry” but they will also delight in the changes in consistency of the oobleck itself.

You can discuss how it looks, feels, and changes when it is touched. The creative possibilities are endless. And it is very easy to make. Try this simple recipe.

Recipe:

2 cups of corn starch
3 drops of green food coloring
Enough water to make a thick mixture (about the texture of pancake batter)

  1. Measure equal amounts of water and cornstarch, but mix water in slowly as you may not need to use it all.
  2. Mix all ingredients together. This makes a fun mixture to play with textures. See what form the mixture will take.
