The Goldilocks Dilemma

Choosing the Appropriate Kindergarten

"Goldilocks tried the first kindergarten and it was too hard. She tried the second and it was too easy. Then she tried the third and it was just right.”

Parents may sometimes feel like Goldilocks, looking for the solution that is “just right” for their child. Because kindergarten students enter school at widely different levels of social, emotional, and academic readiness, what works for one child may not work for all.

To add to the dilemma, many kindergarten students are now expected to sit at desks, take tests, and learn what was traditionally taught in first grade—namely, how to read. For many five-year olds this is simply not developmentally appropriate.
