The Key to Understanding Toddlers

Toddlers are fascinating. They are also extremely perplexing. They seem to flit erratically from one activity to another with an energetic drive but with no apparent purpose. Irrational, impulsive, possessive, and easily explosive, it is entirely impossible to predict what’s coming next.

According to childhood expert, Kay Albrecht, if you want to understand what’s going on in the mind of a toddler, you need to carefully observe them playing. “Toddler play can be remarkably sophisticated and provides us with insight into their thinking. In fact, we often determine where children are developmentally by watching them play.

“Toddlers are very capable of playing with intensity and creativity but the way they play is different from older children. They play in the moment, with the ideas that come to them from their experience or the environment.”

Because of this, it is vital that toddlers are surrounded by supportive and developmentally appropriate materials. In addition, the teachers must understand their critical role in supporting and sustaining positive play experiences. Learn more.
