May I Ask?

“Recently, I’ve been taking note of what people assume, without asking, both with the children in our care and with other adults,” writes Judi Pack. It is easy to jump to conclusions why a parent seems frustrated, a child upset, or a colleague alienated, but what if we’re completely off the mark?

Being able to connect with children, their families, and our colleagues is key to building successful and strong relationships. Taking the time to ask the right questions helps to build a greater understanding and enriches relationships both with other adults and with children. After all, aren’t questions another way of simply saying, “I want to get to know you better?”
