Making Bark Boats

Posted by: Rhonda November 5, 2013

Inspired by all the beautiful leaves on the ground, here’s a simple nature craft we enjoyed in the last few weeks.  This activity provided a whole morning of creative fun and discovery with virtually no preparation except a walk out to the yard:

What you’ll needsticks, pieces of loose tree bark, leaves

  1. Choose a sea-worthy piece of bark. (Will it float?)
  2. Bore or dig a small hole in the center.
  3. Shove a twig into the hole for a mast, making sure that it fits snuggly.
  4. Thread a big leaf onto the stick for a sail.
  5. Find some water and launch your boat!

The best is to float them in a stream, but a sand and water table would work too.  These kids found that an old wheel barrow filled with some rain water was a great substitute “ocean”!
