Learning Outside the Box

Learning Outside the Box

“The kids spend all day, every day outside!” Our colleagues reported after a recent visit to Auchlone Nature Kindergarten in Scotland. Nature Kindergartens spring from the belief that children thrive best outdoors, where learning happens naturally.

“What about when it rains?” we asked incredulously.

“Rain or shine.  There’s never bad weather when you have appropriate clothing. Nature challenges kids to be problem solvers. If you’re cold, move vigorously or build a fire. Figure it out.”

“What about reading and math?”

“Who says you can’t learn those outdoors?”

Amazingly, it works. And what’s more, the movement is spreading all over the world. While not every program can become a Nature Kindergarten, we all can help to increase children’s outdoor time. This short video shows how something as simple as a table can help to extend your curriculum outside. Watch it here.
