How To Make Oobleck

Posted by: Rhonda February 25, 2014

"This snow! This fog! This sunshine! This rain! BAHH! These four things that come down from my sky!"

If King Derwin thought things were bad in the Kingdom of Didd, he obviously didn’t have to deal with the brutal, erratic weather we’ve had this winter! "I want something new to come down," bellowed His Majesty. But what?

"Oobleck," suggested the King’s magicians, "blinking their creaky eyes."

Celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2 by reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck. Then try making some oobleck yourself! Kids will delight in this gooey substance which squiggles in their fists like a "slippery potato dumpling made of rubber."

What you’ll need:
2 cups of corn starch
1 cup water
3 drops of green food coloring

Mix ingredients together in a medium sized bowl. (Add water slowly as it may not need entire cup.) You are aiming for a consistency similar to pancake batter.

For even more fun make up a huge batch in a sand and water table and enjoy exploring the strange properties of oobleck together with your whole class! When you are finished with your oobleck, let it dry out and put it into the garbage can instead of trying to wash it down a drain. (Remember what happened in the Kingdom of Didd…)
