How do children learn to make sense of the world?

“Early childhood education over the last half century has become a downward extension of schooling. It is now the first rung on the educational ladder,” writes David Elkind. “With the rapid expansion and acceptance of early childhood programs, the basic principle of early childhood education, supported by an overwhelming amount of contemporary research and classroom experience, is dismissed as irrelevant.”

The endangered principle he speaks of is, of course, play.

Read what prominent advocates of childhood such as David Elkind, Joan Almon, and Stuart Brown have to say about this critical issue in our staff development booklet: The Wisdom of PlayRequest your free copy here.
