Pumpkin Fun!

Children absorb life and learning through all their senses. At this time of year it’s hard to beat the sensory exploration offered by a pumpkin. From the thrill of scooping out the slimy, stringy innards to the salty crunch of roasted seeds, each experience is a memorable learning opportunity.

Another great way to extend children’s learning is through singing and movement—especially it if directly relates to familiar experiences. Right now the “pumpkin song” is at the top of the hit list in our center:

Scoop out the inside of a pumpkin (Make scooping motions)

Make a mouth, a nose, and two bright eyes. (Point to the appropriate facial features)

Put a light inside your pumpkin, (One arm encircles an imaginary pumpkin; the “candle” is the index finger of your other hand)

Then you’ll have a jack-o-lantern surprise! (Clap)

The tune is simple enough for anyone to catch on to. Listen to the kids singing it here.
