Understanding Numbers

Posted by: Rhonda August 22, 2017

Our center has a birthday song that we like to sing which includes counting up to the age of the birthday child. The other day, a two-and-a-half-year-old spontaneously sang this song for her teacher. Her version went something like this: “1, 2, 3, 4, 19, 13, 20, 11, our teacher is 2 today . . .”

While children understand the song “counts”, for them the numbers are simply a rhyme. (And of course in twos everyone turns 2!)

When and how do young children learn the meaning of numbers? National Consultant, Dr. Marcy Guddemi, discusses this in an intriguing article. Read more here.
