You don’t have to wait until spring to learn about growing plants! Try sprouting carrot tops in your window—they’re super easy and the fern-like, green foliage looks very beautiful. Plus, the little green shoots appear in a matter of days which makes it a perfect project to do with children.

All you need to do is:

1. Cut off the top inch of a carrot. (You can use the rest for a healthy snack!)

2. Place the top in a shallow dish, and add enough water so the carrot tops are halfway covered.

3. Set the dish in a sunny windowsill. In a few days you should see little green sprouts appearing.

4. Check every day, water, and document the growth.

Your plant will never produce a new carrot, but the green foliage will be a lovely addition to your window sill for several months, eventually even flowering—providing you keep it watered!
